Japan’s popularity isn’t due to any single attraction. It has an unusually strong combination of qualities that appeal to very different kinds of travellers.
One major reason is contrast. In a single trip, visitors can experience Tokyo’s futuristic cityscape, Kyoto’s temples and gardens, centuries-old towns, bullet trains, rural landscapes, hot springs and traditional inns. Japan feels unmistakably modern and unmistakably traditional at the same time.
It’s also remarkably comfortable for travellers. Public transportation is excellent, cities are generally clean and orderly, service standards are high, and violent crime is comparatively low. Once visitors understand the railway system, travelling around the country can be surprisingly easy.
Then there’s the food. Sushi may get the publicity, but visitors quickly encounter ramen, tempura, yakitori, soba, udon, tonkatsu, okonomiyaki, regional specialties and beautifully presented multi-course meals. Eating becomes part of the sightseeing.
Japan also rewards attention to small things. A beautifully wrapped purchase, a meticulously maintained garden, the presentation of breakfast at a ryokan, seasonal flowers, a spotless railway station or the courtesy of hotel staff can become as memorable as a famous monument. That sense of care is something many visitors notice almost immediately.
Another factor is seasonality. Cherry blossoms give people a reason to visit in spring; autumn foliage creates another major season; winter brings skiing and snow scenery; summer has festivals and mountain travel. Repeat visitors can experience a noticeably different Japan each time.
And increasingly, Japan benefits from repeat tourism. Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka may attract someone initially, but then they hear about Kanazawa, Takayama, Naoshima, Kyushu, Hokkaido, Shikoku, Okinawa or the Japanese Alps. One trip easily leads to another.
