Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka may attract most first-time visitors to Japan, but travellers willing to venture beyond these familiar destinations are often richly rewarded. Kochi, on the southern coast of Shikoku, is a good example.
Surrounded by mountains and facing the Pacific Ocean, Kochi offers history, excellent food and beautiful scenery in a relaxed setting. It also provides an opportunity to experience a part of Japan that receives far fewer international visitors.
What to See in Kochi
Kochi Castle is the city’s most important historical landmark. Dating from the early 17th century, it is one of only 12 Japanese castles whose original main keeps survived the destruction, fires and redevelopment that claimed so many others. Visitors can enter the historic buildings and enjoy views over the city from the top.
Another popular destination is Katsurahama Beach, a scenic stretch of Pacific coastline just outside the city centre. The area is closely associated with Sakamoto Ryoma, the influential 19th-century samurai and political reformer who was born in Kochi.
For a taste of everyday Kochi, Hirome Market is well worth visiting. Its many food stalls and casual dining areas attract locals as well as visitors. This is an excellent place to try Kochi’s best-known speciality, katsuo no tataki, skipjack tuna lightly seared over a flame and traditionally served with condiments such as garlic and green onion.
A Different Side of Japan
Part of Kochi’s appeal is simply its pace of life. It feels very different from Japan’s largest cities. Streets are less crowded, people have more time, and the surrounding mountains, rivers and Pacific coastline never seem far away.
Kochi is also known for the colourful Yosakoi Festival, held every August, when teams of dancers perform throughout the city.
For travellers who have already seen Japan’s major destinations, or those who want to include somewhere less travelled in a longer itinerary, Kochi makes an excellent addition.
