China, Japan or South Korea: Which one to choose?

China, Japan and South Korea are three of Asia’s most rewarding destinations, but they offer very different travel experiences. For Canadian and American travellers planning their first trip to East Asia, choosing between them may come down to what interests you most, how you like to travel and how much time you have.

China: Best for History, Variety and a Sense of Scale

China is difficult to match for sheer variety. Beijing and Xi’an offer some of the world’s great historical sights, while Shanghai presents a strikingly modern face. Chengdu, Guilin, Yunnan, the Yangtze River and the ancient towns of eastern China reveal completely different landscapes and cultures.

China is particularly rewarding for travellers interested in history, regional cuisine and seeing dramatic contrasts within a single country. Its extensive high-speed rail network also makes travelling between major cities increasingly comfortable and convenient.

Japan: Best for Ease, Tradition and First-Time Visitors to Asia

Japan combines extraordinary cultural depth with an exceptionally efficient travel infrastructure. Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Takayama and other destinations offer everything from temples, gardens and traditional neighbourhoods to some of the world’s most modern cities.

For those visiting Asia for the first time, Japan can be an especially comfortable introduction. Transportation is reliable, cities are orderly and service standards are consistently high.

South Korea: Best for Food, Culture and Something Less Familiar

South Korea is sometimes overlooked by some planning an East Asian holiday, which is part of its appeal.

Seoul is a dynamic modern capital, while Gyeongju provides a fascinating window into Korea’s ancient history. Busan combines coastal scenery, markets, temples and excellent food. Korea also appeals to travellers interested in contemporary Asian culture without sacrificing historical depth.

China, Japan or South Korea – which one to choose?

If ancient history, spectacular sights and geographic variety are your priorities, consider China.

If you value ease of travel, gardens, traditional culture and exceptional service, Japan may be the best choice.

If you want a less familiar destination combining history, food and contemporary culture, consider South Korea.

There is, of course, another answer: visit more than one.

China, Japan and South Korea are natural partners for a multi-country journey. With around three weeks, combining two countries can work very well. To experience all three properly, we recommend allowing considerably more time rather than rushing from one famous sight to another.
