Seoul deserves its place on almost every first trip to South Korea. The capital offers royal palaces, traditional neighbourhoods, excellent museums, markets, restaurants and a fascinating introduction to modern Korean life. But seeing only Seoul means missing much of what makes South Korea interesting.
Travelling beyond the capital reveals ancient kingdoms, Buddhist temples, coastal cities and landscapes that feel very different from metropolitan Seoul.
Gyeongju: Korea’s Historic Heart
For travellers interested in Korean history, Gyeongju is essential. Once the capital of the Silla Kingdom, which ruled much of the Korean Peninsula for nearly a thousand years, the city contains an extraordinary concentration of historic sites.
Among its best-known attractions are Bulguksa Temple, the royal tombs at Daereungwon and the ancient Cheomseongdae astronomical observatory. The Gyeongju Historic Areas are recognized by UNESCO for their importance to Korean history and Buddhist culture.
Busan: South Korea’s Coastal Metropolis
South Korea’s second-largest city offers a completely different atmosphere. Busan stretches along the country’s southeastern coast, combining beaches, mountains, temples, markets and a busy international port.
Haeundae Beach is perhaps its best-known attraction, but Busan is much more than a beach destination. Jagalchi Fish Market reflects the city’s close relationship with the sea, while hillside neighbourhoods and coastal viewpoints provide some of South Korea’s most distinctive urban scenery.
Jeju Island: Volcanic Landscapes and Island Culture
Jeju Island adds yet another dimension to a South Korea itinerary. Formed by volcanic activity, the island is known for lava formations, dramatic coastline and Hallasan, South Korea’s highest mountain.
Jeju also has traditions of its own, including the famous haenyeo, generations of women divers who traditionally harvested seafood by hand without breathing equipment.
Seoul and Beyond
South Korea is relatively compact and has an excellent transportation system, making it practical to combine several destinations in one trip. High-speed trains connect Seoul with cities such as Busan and Gyeongju, while domestic flights make Jeju easily accessible.
For a first visit, combining Seoul with Gyeongju and Busan provides a much broader understanding of the country. Adding Jeju gives travellers even greater variety.
